ENDICOTT, N.Y. (WBNG/Gray News) -- A grandfather who stepped up to take care of his granddaughter also suffers from hearing loss.
However, Dennis Greenier has recently received the gift of a lifetime.
Greenier has been through a lot medically over his more than six decades of life. After having multiple back surgeries and getting five ceramic discs, 28 screws, three rods and a fused lumbar in his back, he still stepped up when his granddaughter, Lily Bell, needed him most.
“Her parents were both drug addicts,” Greenier said. “She was born addicted to heroin. When she was born she spent two weeks in the NICU on morphine to get her off it.”
WBNG reports Greenier gained his life back just this week.
He obtained full custody of his granddaughter, received a new home from his son and gained his hearing back with the help of his Hearing Instrument Specialist Kimberly Geissler.
Through a campaign through “HearingLife” called “Better Hearing,” Geissler nominated Greenier for a pair of free hearing aids after becoming aware that he could not afford them on his own.
“Once I heard his story I knew what I had to do,” Geissler said. “I knew I had to help this man hear his granddaughter. So, he could hear not only now, but in the future.”
On June 6, Greenier was able to hear what he called his pride and joy for the first time at a normal level.
“A lot of stuff I’m missing out on and I miss out on her little voice,” Greenier said. “I can hear her, but not like I can with these in. These are phenomenal.”
