Ex-Waco couple barely able to escape devastating wildfire in New Mexico - KWTX

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - People are experiencing panic and fear in New Mexico as wildfires spread across the southern part of the state.

So far, at least one person has died, and more than 20,000 acres and counting have burned.

Many communities have already evacuated, and others are preparing to do the same.

Mabel Feazell and Chris Auclair said they both lived in Waco for more than 20 years before moving to Alto, New Mexico and didn’t expect something of this magnitude would happen to them.

The couple said after grabbing their last-minute belongings, they had to mentally prepare themselves that it might be the last time they see their home.

“This fire, it got crazy so fast. It looked eerily yellow outside,” said Auclair.

The couple said they moved to New Mexico in 2020 to escape Texas’ heat, now they have to escape dangerous flames.

All of a sudden, the smoke started coming over our house. It was just all of a sudden, it went from almost nothing to this huge fire. Really ugly,” said Auclair

The two said they left Monday night around 7:30 pm, but it was a close call.

“We almost didn’t make it out. We got up to the firetrucks up the road and I asked the guy, ‘Are we able to get out,’ he said, ‘I don’t know,’” said Auclair.

However, the couple said the family of 10 made it out alive, but with only their important documents.

“I closed the door, and I was like, ‘Oh my god, that’s it.’ As bad as it was, you think to yourself, ‘This is probably going to be the last time we see this house,’” said Feazell.

Feazell and Auclair said they have been tracking the fires and there’s one a mile away from their home.

The pair said they relocated to a hotel in Albuquerque with no clue when they’ll be able to return.

Yet, brainstorming ways to help others is top of mind.

“If our cabins don’t burn, we’re probably just going to let local people who loss their houses stay in there without rent,” said Feazell.

“We’re blessed enough to be not worried about whether we lose the house or not. Those are material things, and you can always replace those,” said Auclair.

For those who may have houses in the area, roads are blocked off and no one will be able to check them.

However, you can download the Watch Duty app that tracks where wildfires are.
