Oklahomans keeping their eyes on the skies as Northern Lights could be visible

KOCO 5 Field Meteorologist Michael Armstrong breaks down when the lights show will happen this weekend and whether Oklahomans will be able to see it

NEW AT 5:00, OKLAHOMANS KEEPING THEIR EYES ON THE SKIES TONIGHT BECAUSE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS COULD BE SPOTTED. RIGHT FIELD METEOROLOGIST MICHAEL ARMSTRONG IN STUDIO WITH US NOW. MICHAEL, YOU’RE BREAKING DOWN WHEN THIS LIGHT SHOW WILL HAPPEN, RIGHT? AND A LITTLE BIT OF THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT. I LOVE THIS BECAUSE IT’S A CHANCE TO LOOK IN THE SKY AND SEE SOMETHING THAT’S NOT REALLY THAT THREATENING TO US NECESSARILY. THERE’S A FEW ISSUES WE’LL GET TO THOSE HERE IN JUST A MOMENT, BUT WHAT I WANT TO DO, WELL, LET’S WALK THROUGH THIS. SO LET’S GO AHEAD AND GO TAKE A LOOK RIGHT HERE OKAY. SO YOU’VE GOT A MAGNETIC SHIELD AROUND THE EARTH. WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW IS A SOLAR STORM HAS OCCURRED. AND SO THOSE CHARGED PARTICLES FLOW TOWARD EARTH. AND OUR MAGNETIC FIELD NORMALLY PROTECTS US. BUT WE’RE IN A SOLAR MAXIMUM RIGHT NOW. SO THERE’S A SOLAR CYCLE THAT HAPPENS EVERY 11 YEARS. SO THAT MAKES SOME OF THESE STORMS EVEN STRONGER. SO DURING A SOLAR STORM, THESE EXTRA CHARGED PARTICLES CAN REACH OUR POLES. THAT’S SOME OF THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT. AS WE TAKE A LOOK A LITTLE BIT FURTHER, COLLISIONS HAPPEN. THESE ACTUALLY COME COLLIDE WITH OXYGEN AND NITROGEN IN THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE. AND WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THAT’S WHEN YOU START SEEING A DIFFERENT SPECTRUM OF LIGHT OKAY. SO WITH OXYGEN YOU’RE GOING TO SEE MORE OF YOUR RED, RED AND GREEN LIGHT WITH NITROGEN. THAT’S WHEN YOU GET MORE INTO THOSE PINK AND BLUES. SO THAT’S THAT’S WHAT’S HAPPENING TONIGHT. ALL RIGHT. AND SO THE AURORA SHAPES THEY CAN CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE VIEWING POSITION. AND EARTH’S MAGNETIC FIELD. LET’S LOOK AT WHAT A SEVERE MAGNETIC STORM CAN BRING IN BETWEEN 10 P.M. AND 2 A.M. WOULD PROBABLY BE THE MOST LIKELY TIME THAT YOU MIGHT SEE THIS. IT’S OUR FIRST G-4 CLASS WATCH ISSUED SINCE 2005. THAT’S A LOT OF BIG WORDS, BUT IT’S IT’S A BIG DEAL. OKAY, SO VIEWING IS POSSIBLE IN OKLAHOMA. BETTER CHANCES ARE FURTHER NORTH THOUGH. AND COMMUNICATIONS COULD POSSIBLY BE DISRUPTED FOR SOME, ALONG WITH GPS AND ELECTRIC GRID IMPACTS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. L’S SWITCH SOURCES NOW AND LET ME SHOW YOU THE MAP. SO WE’RE TALKING ABOUT 10 P.M. TO 2 A.M. IS THE BEST TIME. BUT AGAIN, FURTHER NORTH, NEBRASKA ON UP TO THE NORTH. THOSE ARE GOING TO BE THE AREAS THAT HAVE THE MOST LIKELY CHANCE OF SEEING THAT. BUT IT IS POSSIBLE HERE IN OKLAHOMA. AND I’LL SAY THIS IF ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE THIS, THIS IS MY CAMERA THAT I USE. IT’S A SONY, BUT I, I TAKE LONG EXPOSURES. SO IF YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR SHUTTER OPEN FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME AND GATHER IN ALL TH
