It has not been an easy couple of weeks for the residents of Waterloo, Nebraska. Long-time residents like Rodney Maas are continuing to pick up the pieces.“It's been hectic," Maas said.Maas has lived in the same house for over 60 years and is one of the many homeowners who might not be able to rebuild on the current property due to current ordinances for floodway properties."That's what they're telling me, so I don't know," Maas said. With his home now more than 51% damaged, the city says it needs rebuilt but it’s possible not on this property at all."I might just have to start rebuilding like this guy down here, he don't care he says take me to court he's going to rebuild," Maas said. The City of Omaha Planning Department says the adjustments are based on the value of the structure and anyone can appeal the city's adjustments once they are sent out.Rodney and his neighbors are not only dealing with the potential of not being able to rebuild their homes but also the tremendous cleanup efforts that are still ahead of them, dealing with issues like the rain that has hit the area the last couple of days as well as a decrease in volunteers."People are busy and they have a lot going on but unfortunately we've seen a pretty dramatic drop off in the number of volunteers that we would normally get on a day-to-day basis. So, we're just asking the community at large to consider giving a half of day or a day of their time to come out and help clean up," volunteer leader with Omaha Rapid Response Derek Wright said. Those same volunteers are the ones who've helped Maas get back on his feet after listening to his home be torn apart from the basement."Rapid response is a really good deal because this is way beyond me, I couldn't handle this all alone at 81," Maas said.As Maas continues to search for answers, he has one hope, that he can stay where he’s been for the last 60 years. It has not been an easy couple of weeks for the residents of Waterloo, Nebraska. Long-time residents like Rodney Maas are continuing to pick up the pieces.

“It's been hectic," Maas said.

Maas has lived in the same house for over 60 years and is one of the many homeowners who might not be able to rebuild on the current property due to current ordinances for floodway properties.

"That's what they're telling me, so I don't know," Maas said.

With his home now more than 51% damaged, the city says it needs rebuilt but it’s possible not on this property at all.

"I might just have to start rebuilding like this guy down here, he don't care he says take me to court he's going to rebuild," Maas said.

The City of Omaha Planning Department says the adjustments are based on the value of the structure and anyone can appeal the city's adjustments once they are sent out.

Rodney and his neighbors are not only dealing with the potential of not being able to rebuild their homes but also the tremendous cleanup efforts that are still ahead of them, dealing with issues like the rain that has hit the area the last couple of days as well as a decrease in volunteers.

"People are busy and they have a lot going on but unfortunately we've seen a pretty dramatic drop off in the number of volunteers that we would normally get on a day-to-day basis. So, we're just asking the community at large to consider giving a half of day or a day of their time to come out and help clean up," volunteer leader with Omaha Rapid Response Derek Wright said.

Those same volunteers are the ones who've helped Maas get back on his feet after listening to his home be torn apart from the basement.

"Rapid response is a really good deal because this is way beyond me, I couldn't handle this all alone at 81," Maas said.

As Maas continues to search for answers, he has one hope, that he can stay where he’s been for the last 60 years.
