Good morning, Preseasoooon!! Oh, what a time. What a sweaty, sweaty time. Today may have officially marked the “First Day of 2022 Preseason” for UNC Field Hockey, but in our minds, our season started a long time ago.

You’ve heard it before: “Don’t show up unprepared for your first day of anything.” Or, “Make sure you’re doing your Summer Packet, so you’re ready to go on Day 1.” But at Carolina, that doesn’t need to be said. It’s an expected, non-negotiable standard.

Coach Karen Shelton has a bunch of wonderful sayings, as you may know. One we never hear enough of is, “Trust in your preparation.” The big moments are the ones we play for, so we better set ourselves up for success, right? But the majority of people would agree, trust is earned through actions.

Chances are, if you were alone at the airport waiting for your flight, most of you wouldn’t leave your bag with your wallet, laptop, and phone with a stranger to watch while you used the restroom – unless you really had to. However, if your partner, family member, or friend was there, you wouldn’t think twice.

What is the difference? Well, a stranger is a stranger for a reason. And the people closest to you have probably proven over time they have your back and deserve your trust.

The same goes for yourself. You won’t have full trust in yourself and confidence in your abilities unless you prove through actions you can rise up for yourself & those around you and dominate challenges.

“But how does this tie to preparation, Erin?”

Preparation itself is literally the action of becoming ready for what lies ahead.

How can we feel most prepared if we aren’t intentional and deliberate with the actions necessary to succeed? You work hard, create a habit of winning, and take pride in your actions over time so you can rely on everything you’ve done. It doesn’t happen overnight, but that’s why it’s even more rewarding – and weirdly comforting – when it’s go-time.

When it comes to the rivalry games, tournament appearances and National Championships, you want to be able to just go out there and play. But your preparation is what enables you to do so. It’s what instills trust in your teammates, coaches, university, and – most importantly – yourself.

At UNC, we do what we need to do to get 1% better each day. Drills are treated like games, and we learn to be comfortable when things get uncomfortable. We’re intentional with what translates to performance and are students of the game.

We train like we want to play and are perfectionists when it comes to execution. The hard conversations don’t scare us because we know they’ll bring us closer, making us better players and people.

We are competitors.

It’s in our blood, but it’s also something we take very seriously on the field, in the film room, in the locker room and in our own minds.

Coach wouldn’t be able to tell us to trust in our preparation – or have trust in herself and her staff – if we all didn’t share the same mindset and live by it.

The key is never getting bored of preparing. Because there is always something coming up next. Each win sets you up for the next one. And each loss gives you a lesson so you’re better prepared for the challenges ahead.

Prepare to be able to trust yourself. When it’s time, it’ll come naturally.

So, here’s to a season doing what we do best: embodying The Carolina Way day in and day out so we can trust in our preparation and chase our dreams together. Now, the real fun starts…
