At Wednesday’s Houghton City Council meeting, the downtown area was the subject of a lot of discussion in Manager Eric Waara’s administrative report. This past weekend saw volunteers putting in flowers at several locations and the lilacs are in bloom. Veteran’s Park has been spruced up in anticipation of the Memorial Day VFW program. Crosswalks have a fresh coat of paint on US-41 and street sweepers have been active.

In other work, East Houghton Waterfront Park infrastructure has some damage that is scheduled to be fixed, says Waara.

There’s different building maintenance, the facade that’s on the building needs paint and a few things like that, but also the high water levels played heck with that dock down there a little bit and there’s some work, we’re probably going to have to do a little excavating.

The touch ups are leading to results. Warm, sunny weather Saturday had people flocking to city property.

Portage Paddle is open, they opened Saturday. According to Brendan I think they had their best opening day ever. They’re looking forward to a nice summer and it’s certainly nice having a concessionaire down there.

The city passed resolutions to submit grant applications, one to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and another for the US Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program. The latter will be used to help purchase a new police cruiser.

Joan Suits, Jan Cole, and Robert Megowan were selected as the council’s representatives for the Charrette Ready workshop on June 29th and 30th. The council received five applications from the public, selecting four of those to take part. They include Craig Waddell, Alan Kiley, Linda Lohmann, and Elise Nelson.
