Harmony siblings and seventh and eighth graders Isabella and Diego Gonzalez have together led a project in their schools that encourages staff, students and parents to collect plastic bottles, lids and aluminum hoops in order to donate them to Tapitas por una Sonrisa A.C.

Tapitas por una Sonrisa A.C. was founded in 2015 and along with their parents, both Isabella and Diego have been active participants in providing recyclable material to the organization since the beginning. The organization directs the caps to Monterrey where they recycle the material and provide monetary support to the Alianza Anticancer Infantil, an organization that helps families with children who have cancer.

Diego and Isabella pushed the school’s administration to cooperate in the collection after seeing their classmates throw away bottle caps.

“I saw all the time that people threw (bottle caps) and with that they could save a lot of children with cancer’s lives,” Diego said.

According to Diego, he proposed the idea to his counselor after he thought of the benefits and later wrote a letter to his principal. Once approved, he brought a container to fit caps from the students and his efforts were a success. Once full, Diego and Isabella collect the container and deliver to the organization.

As a family, they have collected bottle caps for five years, but the Harmony project was started in September. According to Diego, he believes that over 1,500 bottle caps were collected. They were featured on the school’s social media pages showing 10 containers filled with bottle caps.

“It makes me happy because with bottle caps, it’s just an easy step … to collect that bottle cap and just save it and you can save a lot of lives with just a small bottle cap,” Isabella said.

Alianza Anticancer Infantil was created in 1995 due to the high number of children sick with cancer. It was founded by a group of parents who have been affected by child cancer. Their mission is to ensure that every child with cancer will have the same medical attention regardless of economic conditions.

For five years, the Gonzalez collected bottle caps and delivered them at the end of every month, Diego said. After seeing the efforts and success at his own school, he hopes that every school in Laredo follows suit. And while the COVID-19 pandemic cut a half of the school semester around the city, Perla Gonzales, mother of Diego and Isabella, said that they started calling their friends and asked them to continue collecting bottle caps.

“If all schools and the community keep these bottle caps and turn them in, a lot of lives will be saved of kids with cancer and life will be happier,” Diego added.

Isabella said that her friends really liked the ideas and were familiar with Tapitas por una Sonrisa A.C. and brought the bottle caps they had at home. She understands that there will be students and staff that may still not participate and said that she will continue to work her next school years to get more people to donate the caps and recycle the bottles.

The efforts not only help children with cancer in Monterrey, but also help the environment. Diego said that students, schools and the community can help the children while helping to keep the environment clean.

Perla said that by setting containers at their home, a habit is formed, which is how they started donating the bottle caps. From shampoo bottles to water bottles, all caps help children with cancer, she added.

“By simply collecting bottle caps, one can help without thinking,” Perla said.

After some time of collecting, Perla said that was a case where a truck was used to deliver all the bottle caps collected by the family and there was still not enough space to fit them all. She encourages everyone to reconsider throwing out bottlecaps and support Tapitas por una Sonrisa A.C.
