Eau Claire (WQOW)- Local churches are teaming up to help area students get what they need to go back to school.

'We Care Eau Claire' is collecting school supply donations for economically disadvantaged students in the community. The organization, made up of 12 area churches, is collaborating with the Eau Claire Area School District to distribute the supplies to students based on their most essential needs by grade level. So far the churches have collected countless boxes of supplies that include notebooks, binders and backpacks, and they hope to collect more to help as many students as possible.

"We're a people of hope, and we want to share hope in this tough time where a lot of people are arguing or frustrated with masks and with the sickness," said Jordan Van Proosdy, mission director at Peace Church. "So we said 'hey, let's come out and let's show them that the community cares about these kids and wants to help.'"

The churches hope to collect enough supplies to give to at least 2,000 kids at a drive-thru pick up event in Phoenix Park later this month. The group is still working out the date and details of the event with the city council.
