Verizon settlement update: Here’s why you may not be able to apply yet - NJ.com

Last week’s news that Verizon customers could be eligible for up to $100 as part of a class action settlement got a lot of attention.

The company agreed to pay $100 million to settle claims that it charged “deceptive and unfair” administrative fees that were not properly disclosed to some wireless customers.

Current and former Verizon customers who had wireless or data services between Jan. 1, 2016, and Nov. 8, 2023, may be eligible, but some eager customers who went online to make a claim learned they couldn’t do it yet.

The claims website at verizonadministrativechargesettlement.com asks consumers to enter their “Notice ID” and “Confirmation Code.”

But consumers have to wait to receive those numbers in their email or through a postcard notification, Stephen DeNittis of DeNittis Osefchen Prince of Marlton, the attorney who brought the suit on behalf of customers, told NJ Advance Media.

The website will be updated in the coming days so consumers can search for their name to see if they are eligible, he said.

DeNittis said the 58 million affected customers would receive email or mailed postcard notifications with the needed information by Jan. 16, and a second batch of reminder notices would be sent by Jan. 31.

“There will be no disadvantages if they file later than someone else,” he said. “The claims period is until April 15, so no claims are processed until April 15.”

DeNittis said postcards will only be mailed to about a million people for whom Verizon didn’t have email addresses.

If you don’t receive a notice but you believe you are eligible, the settlement website offers a paper application.

Of the settlement, Verizon last week said it “clearly identifies and describes its wireless consumer Admin Charge multiple times during the sales transaction, as well as in its marketing, contracts and billing.”

“This charge helps our company recover certain regulatory compliance, and network related costs,” a spokesperson said. “As always, our Company stands committed to transparency and the clear disclosure of all consumer charges and fees.”

The lawsuit, which was first filed in Middlesex County Superior Court, said the charges ranged from 40 cents a month per line to $3.30 a month per line, with the costs increasing over time.

The number of claims that are filed will determine how much each customer receives, but it could be as high as $100 per customer and no lower than $15, according to the settlement.

Consumers have until April 15, 2024, to file a claim at https://www.verizonadministrativechargesettlement.com/

Also take care when you try to visit the claims site and be sure to spell the web address correctly. Some readers have found a misspelling — with one character off in the spelling — takes them to sites that imitate the real one.

It’s unclear who is running the sites, but it’s common for scammers, ID thieves and others to create websites that look authentic as they attempt to trick people and take their personal information.

Just type carefully.
