BIG RAPIDS – The regular season has ended for volleyball teams who now focus on districts this week.

Morley Stanwood is at Kent City and will play White Cloud on Wednesday. The winner plays in Thursday’s title match against Kent City, Ravenna or Lakeview.

“With districts you just never know, Kent City is a strong and scrappy team,” MS coach Robin Kozuch said. “They also have home court advantage. We will need to be ready. I feel like if we play to our potential we should do well. We can’t look past White Cloud either.

“That is what is so great about volleyball, it is a game of momentum. We never look past any team.”

The Mohawks were at Central Montcalm on Saturday and lost in the finals of the Central Montcalm Invitational to a Cadillac team 25-15, 25-11.

“They have an almost 6-4 middle hitter and three more six-foot kids,” Kozuch said. “They also have a setter going to Northwood who is very good.”

The Mohawks beat Chippewa Hills in the semifinal 25-20, 25-20.

They were 3-0 in pool play and beat Lakeview (25-7, 25-8), Tri County (25-18, 25-11) and Hesperia 25-15, 25-21).

Leading the Mohawks in kills were Braelyn Berry (40) and Madison Garbow (22).

Berry had eight aces and Garbow six. Berry had 68 digs, Brooke Edgerly 38 and Ayiana Sims 33. Cornell had 42 assists and Sienna Ososki 20.

Big Rapids is at the Shepherd district and plays Alma on Monday.

“We played them at our home tournament in September and they are a good team,” Big Rapids coach Emily Van Culin said. “We have a good chance at being successful against them if we play our best. I’d say the best team in our District is Shepherd. We played them at our home quad meet. They have a very good outside hitter.”

Chippewa Hills plays Reed City on Wednesday in the Alma district. The title game is on Thursday.

Chip Hills was third at the Central Montcalm Invitational.

“We placed first in our pool of Pine River, Reed City and Central Montcalm,” Chippewa Hills coach Hali Williams said. “Overall we played well and was able to fight back from being behind in a couple sets. We were going out of our comfort zone which was great to see. We were placed in the gold bracket with the first place teams out of the other two pools.”

CCA coach Susie Hunter said her team will not be participating in districts this year due to COVID issues.
