Bad news struck the Penn State football program on Wednesday evening. According to head coach James Franklin, star running back Journey, who missed every game this season for an undisclosed condition, won’t be returning.

Unfortunately for Brown, not only is his season over, his football career is over. It was discovered Brown had a heart condition that will prevent him being able to play.

Franklin released a statement regarding Brown on Wednesday.

“It was discovered through a routine COVID-19 test, although it is not COVID related,” Franklin said. “We learned about this in early September, and we've been working through this and dealing with this as a team. Journey is one of the most popular and respected players on our team. The entire organization is rallied behind Journey and his family. We need Nittany Nation to do the same as I know we will. Journey has handled this unbelievably well. I know he'll be extremely successful and whatever he decides to do. He's been serving as an assistant coach running backs coach has been very involved. He's been traveling to all the games and all those types of things. ... We were able to go outside and get some second opinions. And it was confirmed.”

Earlier in October, it was initially reported that Brown could miss the season.

"Journey Brown is being treated for a medical condition discovered during the off-season and will potentially miss the 2020 football season," the statement said.

Shortly after the news, Brown released a message to Penn State fans, saying he couldn’t wait to return to the field, but gave no timetable.

“What’s up Penn State, what's up Meadville, just making a quick video to let y’all know I’m feeling better than ever and I really do appreciate all the text messages and praise you guys are sending me,” Brown said in the video. “But if there’s one thing I can reassure you guys of, it’s that the Lawn Boyz are going to come out and show out. I cannot wait to get back on the field with them and my team.”

There was plenty of player reaction and well wishes given to Brown by fellow players after the news of his season initially being in jeopardy.

Brown’s final game of the 2019 season was not only his best, but also one of the top individual bowl performances in school history. His 202 rushing yards in Penn State’s 55-39 Cotton Bowl win over Memphis were the most ever by a Nittany Lion in a postseason game and the sixth-most ever in the prestigious bowl. His 12.6 yards per carry vs. the Tigers were the most ever by a Penn State player in a bowl.

Brown arrived at Penn State later that summer, but with a couple of guys named Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders at the top of the running backs depth chart, the decision was made to redshirt him. Brown had only eight carries as a reserve behind Sanders in 2018 as he learned how to more effectively unleash his speed on the football field.
